How did nectar spill from the Amrit Kumbh ? There are many stories in the Puranas about this, but the most accurate one is from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). On the suggestion of Lord Vishnu, both the gods and demons were ready for the churning. Although there were some difficulties, the churning eventually began. Everyone hoped for the nectar, but the first thing to emerge was the deadly poison, Halahal ( Kalakoot ). As this poison started destroying the world, Lord Shiva stepped forward and drank the poison to protect creation.
The Goddess Ganga reached Rishikesh and once again looked up at the tall mountains. This was her last stop among the mountains, and from here, she was about to begin her journey towards the plains. Haridwar is the first part of the plains that the Goddess Ganga nourishes with her nectar-like waters.
It has been a belief for ages that Ganga water is like nectar because it contains the same nectar that emerged from the churning of the ocean long ago. In that churning, both gods and demons worked hard, but they fought so much over the nectar that the demons could never get it.

During this battle, some of the nectar spilled from the kumbh (pot), and where its sacred drops fell on Earth, four holy places became pilgrimage sites. Haridwar is the first of these sites, and after that, Prayagraj, known as the king of all pilgrimage sites, is even more revered. This is where the confluence of three rivers takes place, and the Maha Kumbh 2025 will be celebrated here.
